Moths From North and South America Eating Kyushu Crops

Caterpillars of Spodoptera frugiperda (also known as fall armyworm), a foreign moth native to North and South America, has been found in five prefectures in Kyushu. Announcements have been made by the prefectures of Kagoshima, Oita, Miyazaki, Kumamoto and Nagasaki this month, where the crop-eating insect have been discovered. Spodoptera frugiperda is said to fly for some hundred kilometers overnight in adulthood. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries have alerted farmers in the area to consult with the prefectural offices and take proper measures when they see the insect.
