According to a report in the Nishinippon Newspaper on January 7, the management team that will assume control of Fukuoka Airport from this April is hoping to introduce a direct flight between San Francisco and Fukuoka by 2023. Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal currently operates nonstop flights to 18 cities in 10 countries and regions. However, most of the destinations are in Asia. Delta Air Lines offers presently a flight to Honolulu five times a week, but there is currently no direct link to the US mainland. A Fukuoka-Portland flight path was established in October 1998 but discontinued within a year. A plan has also been put forward to increase the number of domestic flights available from 23 cities (26 routes) to 30 cities (33 routes) by 2048. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun, 1/7/2018
