Retail Sales Down in Kyushu During May

The Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on July 8 that retail sales (across 431 stores) in the region during the month of May were down by 0.6% compared to the same period last year. Clothing sales decreased by 0.8%, while food sales were up 0.2%. Sunscreens sold well in supermarkets and women’s dresses proved popular with customers in department stores. However, the total spending for the average customer has declined. Source: Nikkei Shimbun, 7/8/2019
