Restrictions will be placed on the amount of water that can be taken from the Yabakei Dam in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. The situation began to worsen once the rainy season finished. Since that time rainfall in the Yamakuni River basin water has been 30% lower than average. The dam’s water storage level has dropped to 31%. The local branch of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism began restricting water intake on August 31. However, an emergency council made up of representatives from local governments met on September 6 to discuss what to do if conditions become more severe. A decision was made that Nakatsu City and various parts of Fukuoka City will further restrict their water intake if the reservoir rate falls below 25%. This resolution will not impact Yamakuni Town. The plan is to reduce the amount of water supplied by 25% for daily life, 45% for agricultural purposes, and 90% for industry while levels return to normal. Nakatsu City is trying to encourage its residents to conserve water. The city is spreading the news by distributing leaflets and using vehicles equipped with public announcement systems.
