Cafe & Shochu – Showa-style

“In an old wooden home in the back streets of Shirogane that was previously used as a pottery gallery, graphic designer by day, shochu advisor by night, Okuma-san and friends collaborated to put together this truly unique space. By day, it’s a cafe and Karatsu ceramic gallery. The daily plate lunch always includes a fresh salad, soup, choice of fish or meat, rice or her homemade breads, and a drink, all served on gallery manager Oguruma and his master’s ceramics. Due to its tucked away location, the daytime cliental mostly consists of housewives who enjoy the quiet homey atmosphere. But after the sun sets, the soft background music changes to American and British rock from the 60’s and 70’s,- and it’s shochu time! Okuma-san, a licensed “”shochu advisor””, is happy to offer suggestions on his stock of over 450 different varieties of shochu, all reasonably priced from 350 yen to 950 yen per serving. His shochu menu, complete with photos and comments on the majority of them, is a fascinating and educational browse. Last but not least, the decor: almost everything form the mechanical cash register, eye-sight chart, 45 and LP covers, are “”showa period””, even the old black & white television that continuously loops TV shows and movies from the 50’s and 60’s. Mogura’s staff is super-friendly and warmly welcome international guests. Very much worth looking for.”
