In 1986 Fukuoka and Auckland formally signed their sister city agreement. Since then, sports such as yachting and rugby, have played an increasingly important role in linking the two cultures. Today many of foreign players and coaches on Kyushu’s professional rugby teams are from New Zealand. This month it’s my pleasure to introduce one of these champs from overseas who’s here not to just win the games, but to help spread the fun and excitment of rugby.

NOTE: Encounter is Fukuoka Now’s interview page. Each month an inspiring individual from the Fukuoka community is introduced. The interview is conducted and printed in Japanese. For the convenience of non-Japanese, phonetic kana characters appear above the kanji (Chinese characters) Unfortunately, this can not be replicated on our site. Click on the word ” Japanese” of the small Japanese flag to read the text in Japanese.
