St. Patrickユs Day is approaching again – the day when the whole world goes green! Originally a holy day commemorating the death of St. Patrick, the founder of Christianity in Ireland, March 17th is now a good excuse for excessive drinking and general celebration of all things Irish! Green is the golden rule: don green garb or be pinched; dye your beer green; wear a shamrock, the national symbol of the Emerald Isle. Donユt be a shrinking violet ミ get out there and do what the Irish do best: drink, sing and be merry!

Eireユll Raise a Pint to That!

Hello all…What about ye! I’m Aaron Mullan, a native Emerald Islander. I’m here in Fukuoka teaching English and enjoying all things Japanese. Back home I was a bartender for seven years, so I’m here to tell you what to be filling your glasses with on St. Patrick’s Day.

Beers!

Guinness Stout
The famous “Black Beer”, a stout by definition, is smooth and silky to the taste. Famed for giving strength due to the amount of iron it contains, it is undoubtedly an enduring symbol of Irishness the world over.

Kilkenny
A smooth and tasty drink, refreshing and clear in appearance. It pours like a stout and drinks like an ale. Quickly becoming a formidable adversary to its more famous black brother. A pleasant malty ale, not too heavy, with plenty of bite.

Whiskies!

Bushmills
A spicy, dry whiskey with a lingering maltiness. Gentle and drinkable at any time, straight or on the rocks. Its light taste also makes it the ideal base for cocktails. Triple distilled for extra smoothness.

Jameson
A mellow, sweet whiskey balanced by fresh floral notes. Regarded by many as the classic of its type. This is the biggest selling whiskey outside Ireland. A pot-still whiskey with sherry undertones; incredibly smooth yet reassuringly potent.

Powers (Gold Label)
Winner of the 2000 World Spirits Competition. The best-selling whiskey in Ireland, also known as the “Three Swallow” whiskey due to its indisputable intensity and enduring quality. Regarded by most as the quintessential Irish whiskey.
