One of the youngest bars on Oyafuki-dori, Cream opened in January 2009 to fill a niche in the party scene with an emphasis on carefully hand-mixed music and drinks, and a grueling weekend schedule which attracts some of the most genki after-partiers. All the same, Cream is less a club and more like a bar with a dance floor and a very decent sound system: it’s small enough to chat but big enough to dance, and owners My and Jay are outgoing (not to mention tireless) hosts. “We were inspired by the European style of club,” says Jay, who as Jay Gutta is one of Cream’s regular DJs and a leading local rapper. “We play new music you can’t hear anywhere else: not just modern Hip-Hop but old-school and Eurohouse”. Before opening Cream Jay and My were regular party people themselves, says Jay, and they’ve tried to keep that kind of informal atmosphere in the bar. Cream draws in a surprisingly varied crowd, but there’s a regular rush at 23:00 and another at about 4:30 on weekends. Weeknights see a less hard-partying crowd, with open-mike (Weds), ¥200 beer (Thu) and ¥300 martinis (Sun).
