Organically Yours

With the modernization of farming methods, agriculture literally is being pulled from its organic roots (no pun intended!). It’s comforting to see folks going out of their way to educate others and provide healthy and delicious alternatives to regular restaurant fare. For the last 19 years, the smiling women who run Lau Lau have been serving inexpensive lunches and dinners featuring organically grown vegetables and brown rice. Last month, they moved into a new and more spacious location just south of the Yakuin 4-way intersection. The new venue provides space for the occasional live performance and an expanded shop offering tofu, fresh vegetables, coffee and more. The daily lunch includes your choice of a meat or fish dish, a choice of two side dishes from a selection of five, pickles, the tea-of-the-day, and brown or white rice mixed with barley and red beans ミ all for just 800 yen. If you become a regular, as many people do, save money by purchasing the ten lunch ticket book for 7,500 yen. While it’s not a vegetarian restaurant, leaf eaters won’t have any problem finding a plethora of veggie friendly options. Vegetarian and musician Elvis Costello is known to frequent Lau Lau when in town. Every effort is made to use only 100% organic produce, but even at Lau Lau, sometimes that’s impossible. Still, they do what they can, such as only using produce from suppliers and farmers they know. In the evenings, you can order ・la carte or take advantage of one of the set dinners. Don’t forget to try one of their healthy desserts. Now you can really have your cake and eat it too!
