Kool & Kitsch

“During his many years of living and working in other cities around Japan, Kajimoto sadly noticed how his hometown Fukuoka, has retained so few of its old buidings and shops. Fukuokans love anything new and modern and seem unconcerned about demolishing the old. So two years ago when Kajimoto open his bar, Medata-ya (celebration!) he selected a narrow backstreet behind Watanabe-dori lined with other snacks and bars from the post-war era. Not current cool – but definitely retro-cool. As you enter Medeta-ya it’s as if you’ve been transported 40 years or so in time. The walls are adorned with posters from film, TV, and recording artists from the Showa era and other objects that were once common place in everyone’s homes, but now oh-so natsukashii (nostalgic). Another highlight of this colorful pub is Kajimoto’s display of over 150 canned food items! And they’re not just on display. Each item is priced (200 yen~1,200 yen) and can be eaten straight from the can or heated up and served on a plate. Standards like oil sardines, hams and spams, are plentiful or be adventurous an try something exotic, like canned grasshopper or bees in light oil. Yummy? Sapporo Red Star Lager is the recommended old-style beer and you can even enjoy it in an old vintage glass of your choice. Kajimoto is a very friendly man and welcomes our non-Japanese readers interested in experiencing Japan as it was a generation ago.
