Fukuoka’s development continues, with the trend leaning towards the modern, fashionable, and upscale. Tokyo-based Global Dining’s opening of a dazzling three-story restaurant, bar and cafe complex above the Apple Store on Nishi-dori is a prime example. As you exit the elevator on the 6th floor, turn left for Gonpachi, with its Japanese menu and ambience, or stay on course and go left to enter La Boheme Qualita. As you approach the entrance, you’ll spot the pastry chef preparing mouth-watering sweets right before your eyes. Once inside, enjoy the bright and airy cafe space of the 6th floor, ideal for lunches, or head downstairs to the elaborately decorated, multi-tiered main dining area. There’s also the 7th floor, offering more of a lounge atmosphere, including plush seating, a counter bar, and a spacious outdoor patio. The menu is “traditional Italian,” with handmade pizzas from a wood-fired oven, pastas, salads, meat and fish entrees, and of course the fresh and irresistible desserts… Despite the stunning interior and great service, you’ll be surprised to find that La Boheme Qualita is quite affordable: lunches start at 550 yen, (add 390 yen for salad, focaccia and coffee, 100 yen more for dessert), and the generous, multi-course dinner set is only 3,800. Starting in May, the restaurant will also feature a lunchtime salad bar. What’s more, with the exception of the 7th floor, La Boheme Qualita is all non-smoking. A breath of fresh air on Fukuoka’s dining scene!
