Culture & Comfort

Lately it seems that in almost every corner of the city, old traditional-style homes are being converted into cafes and bars. Last month Tsuyoshi Koijma opened the charming Manten Shuraku in the heart of Daimyo – and what a beautiful oasis indeed! The hallway has been converted into a cozy kakuichi (standing bar) with bright red walls. This is a “Japanese pub”, not a “western-style pub in Japan”. Representing the ultimate in casualness, cutomers serve themselves beers and sake from the fridge. Meanwhile, lining the length of the tatami rooms next door you’ll find low tables and backrests and views into the garden. In the evenings, a selection of light dishes and matching shochu and sake are offered by kimono-clad staff. Recommendations include the yudofu (tofu hot pot – 800 yen), smoked chicken wings (500 yen), and the smoked bacon and vegetables in anchovy oil 800 yen. In the daytime, Japanese sweets and green tea are served (500 yen). The second floor of this eclectic building is well worth a look – you’ll find a small art gallery and, yes, this is not a misprint – Taiwanese foot massages! But wait – there’s even more! They also offer Korean and Chinese language lessons in the daytime, and the pub area becomes a showroom for artisan handicrafts and accessories. Manten Shuraku is certainly more than just a spot to wet your whistle. Show up on Wednesday evening in a kimono and your first drink is free!
