Slow Food & Slow Life in Itoshima
Most people head out to Itoshima for the surf, sand and mountains. So after a full day of sightseeing or being outdoors it’s nice to have a quiet and cool place to chill-out in. Rustic Barn, a simple, old Japanese country house with a garden, patio and hammock, is just the place. If it feels like you’re visiting a friend’s house, well, you might be. The friendly owner Mako-san lives there and does all the decorating, flower arranging, and most importantly, the cooking too. Most of her dishes, such as pastas, curries, and breakfasts are made from seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers, as well as her own garden. Currently popular is her Nan Pizza made with three kinds of cheeses, and garden-fresh herbs. It’s perfect for a light lunch or as a side dish with a beer, cocktail or one of her many herbal teas. There’s also several homemade desserts including chocolate and fruit parfaits that are guaranteed to make you smile and feel like a kid.
