Kyushu’s first Ethiopian restaurant, decorated with pan-African art, opened this June on the third floor of a modern building in Daimyo. Owner, Ohta-san, who went to college in America and spent six months in eastern Africa, hopes Fasika (an Ethiopian festival) will become a center for people interested in African culture. For now, her attention is focused on serving tasty and authentic Ethiopian cuisine. Sparing no expense, Heiwa-san, a professional cook from Ethiopia, has been retained. The menu will undoubtedly expand in the future, but for now the traditional dinner as pictured here is the must-try. There are spicy vegetable and meat dishes, usually in the form of wot, a thick stew, served atop injera, a large sourdough which is about 35 centimeters in diameter. Ethiopians eat with their right hands, using pieces of injera to pick up bites of entrées and side dishes. You can order any combination of wot, including vegetarian options. The sharing and mixing of wot makes for a fun and unique dining experience. Besides traditional Ethiopian fare, other izakaya items are served, such as salads and desserts. Ethiopian coffee, coffee jelly, and the coffee pudding are also highly recommended.
