“Everybody has walked by them, perhaps even peaked in curiously, but few of us have dared to enter. The kakuichi, (Japanese stand-up pubs) are neighborhood liquor shops with make-shift counters for inexpensive in-store imbedding. Miyahara, near the Yakuin six-way intersection, is a classic example of these sadly diminishing institutions. Opened in 1934 as a general provisions shop and licensed retailer of liquor, salt and tobacco products, it wasn’t until 1950 that Miyahara began offering kakuichi services. Largely self-service, regulars grab beers or other chilled beverages from the fridge and take them back to the couner, along with snacks, canned foods, or whatever takes their fancy on the well-stocked shelves. Note: if it’s your first time, please wait to be served. Glasses and chopsticks are provided by Miyahara’s daughter, or her son-in-law, from whom you can also order small seasonal dishes such as tofu, tempura, and cooked wieners. The no frills service means rock bottom prices. Dry snacks are priced at the take-away standard and bottled beverages are marked up so slightly that it’s not worth mentioning. Unlike the trendy and hip bars of Daimyo, the kakuichi almost guarantee visitors a conversation with someone new, or one of the “”regulars””. Miyahara and other kakuichi are filled with charm and nostalgia and are highly recommended to non-Japanese who want to get beneath the surface of Japan.
