I first spotted Mathias five years, unloading wine from a truck near our
office. Why was a foreigner delivering wine, I wondered? Later I saw him all
over town, chatting with chefs and owners of some of Fukuoka’s best European
restaurants and bars. Eventually we met, chatted, and I learned that he
wasn’t a delivery man, but a French wine expert. From then on, I’ve called
him the “Wine Man”.
