Seaside Summer Town

Swimming, fishing and fun on the beach
this summer spot has it all!

Ashiya-machi, located in northern Fukuoka Prefecture at the mouth of the Onga River, was once a bustling port town from which the coal of the Chikuho region was shipped to other areas of Japan. As the railroad replaced ships, its identity as a port town began to fade. It has since developed a new face as one of Fukuoka’s most popular bathing spots. The 3-km stretch of beach from Ashiya to Sanri-Matsubara and Hatsu is simply beautiful, and is usually crowded with visitors in July and August. Head north on the same beach, and you will find some natural wonders, such as Senjojiki, a rock formation molded over the years by the eroding effect of seawater, and Dozan, a 10-meter-tall hole that has been carved out of stone by the wind. Fishing fanatics are also drawn to Ashiya, and during low tides the beach is an irresistible playground.
Another lovely local sight is Natsuigahama, where the blooming crinum flowers are at the northernmost point of their natural range, and indicate summer by giving the seashore a colorful tinge. In August, the clear blue sky and sun float above Ashiyaユs ocean view. Succumb to Ashiyaユs lively summer charm.

Ashiya Kaihin Park

A festival that makes use of Ashiyaユs beautiful sandy beaches. Impressive sand statues over 8 meters tall replicate such landmarks as Angkor Wat and St. Peter’s Basilica. At night, the statues are lit up, with fireworks and lights creating an amazing show. A special temporary parking area is set up during the event at the Ashiya Speedboat Race Center, with a free shuttle bus provided.
