Genki Porridge

After years of preparing Chinese food in one of Fukuoka’s top international hotels, Sasaki-san, this native of Dalian recently opened her own restaurant on Kego-hondori. “Food isn’t just fuel”, she explains, “It should replenish the body with nutrients and give the soul a boost.” She’s on a mission to introduce Japanese people to healthy, home-style Chinese cuisine. The centerpiece of her menu is okayu, or rice porridge. In China it’s often found at the breakfast table or enjoyed late in the evening. In Japan, it’s often made for people with some sort of sickness, like the common cold. It may not sound very exciting but wait until you try it! Here it’s served in a special earthenware bowl surrounded by four saucers filled with seasonal toppings. These can be sprinkled on top or nibbled alongside. There are 15 varieties of okayu to choose from, each made with a unique mixture of vegetables, herbs, fish and meat. In addition to okayu, there are plenty of other dishes offered, many of which are made with ingredients imported direct from China. The Kin course at 2,300 yen includes an okayu of your choice or fried rice, soup, and your choice of two a la carte dishes and dessert. This will fill most people to the brim, but you might be tempted to finish with a cup of healthy Chinese tea, wine or beer.
