Super-style Dining

As the name bluntly states, they serve a huge variety of delicious specialty foods sourced directly from as far north as Hokkaido, to Okinawa in the south. Owner Nakahara-san literally drives around the country scouting for unique foods, most of which are unavailable elsewhere. He recently scored salmon from Hokkaido, which due to irregular weather returned to their river in the off-season and became available. All the ingredients are displayed in large supermarket-like coolers so diners see what they’ll be eating before the cooks get to work. Customer orders are welcomed, so if you want your veggies prepared just like your Mom’s – just ask! Of course there’s a handwritten menu too, but it changes so often due to seasonality and supply it’s not really worth explaining. The dining hall is minimalist. The tables are just sheets of plywood nailed onto two-by-fours and stools, are, well, just stools! The most remarkable thing about the interior is the large brick barbeque grill. Staff, and sometimes customers, can be seen tending to their meals over charcoal briquettes. As you leave, you might be wishing you could eat such fresh vegetables and fresh fish everyday. Well now you can. Nihonretto is as much a mini-supermarket as it is a diner. All the ingredients are on sale, and can even be preordered!
