A fixture of the Oyafuko-dori scene, Fubar’s infamous nomihodai is a favorite of JETs and young groups of internationals, and the bar is run by experienced crowd-pleasers with a real feel for community. Chances are that irrepressible manager Jody will know you, and probably your drink of choice, by your third trip to the bar. That personal touch is one of the most entertaining parts of this small, well-appointed club, even if you’re just one of dozens of nomihodai bracelet-wavers on reliably-packed Friday or Saturday nights (All-you-can-drink: women ¥2,000, men ¥3,000. Includes entry). Something about the busy bar and open seating makes conversation with strangers easy, and a Fubar night has been many a Fukuoka newcomer’s first step into the young pub-going community. The music generally stays firmly within the pop top 40, but with a range of Djs you’ll often get pretty cutting-edge stuff mixed in with the crowd favorites. Special events are infrequent but always worth looking up for imaginative cocktails and drink deals, especially novelty-rich Halloween and costume nights. Ladies Night (Tues, ¥1,000 ladies’ only cocktail nomihodai) is a more downbeat affair which shows off Fubar’s strong community following.
