Way Out West

“Kaoi means “”best”” in Maori, and there’s no better place for burned-out beach creatures west of the city to unwind. Located above a windsurfing shop on Nagatare Beach, and just 10 minutes from Imajuku Station, the bar’s windowside tables boast a big view of Hakata Bay and Nokonoshima. Brag about your wakeboard acrobatics as you work your way through the long list of drinks – or ask the staff to mix you an original cocktail. The rather shorter food menu features fresh spring rolls, juicy spare ribs and healthy salads. Adding to the tropical beach hut feel are furnishings fashioned from driftwood, including big two-seater bar stools, all lightly coated by the salty sea breeze. Owner Yasuhiko Miura worked as a DJ for nearly a decade before moving out of the city, and he now spins mostly mellow tunes inside the bar and harder stuff at special local events. Laidback times for all, especially non-surfers looking for an escape from the city.”
