With one of the broadest bases of appeal in the city, Space Terra in Kego is currently a relatively undiscovered gem. It’s well worth the trek through Daimyo, where most of the other international bars cluster, for cocktails you won’t find anywhere else or to catch one of a surprising variety of theme nights. Owner Mr. Yuji Watanabe and Co-owner Shion-san lived in and performed in Manhattan as musicians for nearly twenty years, and they brought back cocktail expertise and a mind-bendingly broad taste in music, not to mention barman Star, who mixes up some of Fukuoka’s classiest hooch. Mudslide (¥800, pictured) and Red Devil (¥1,000) are a specialty, though American cocktails are only served on Thursdays, which also hosts “Terra Lounge” DJ House and Jungle/Wave music, with no cover charge. “Creation Cocktails” like “Sophisticated Lady” or “Poor Butterfly” are served on other nights, and often specially mixed to match the owners’ Jazz duo performances. Other nights might see a traditional, mesmerizing performance of butoh dance or an open jam “Percussion Party”. It’s never quite what you expect, but whether you check their calendar online and go in to catch a specific performance, or you just wander in after work, Space Terra can start to feel like home very quickly.
