Fukuoka Now has put together a inexpensive hostel guide to help you save money and explore all your accommodation options, depending on what style of accommodation, location and environment you prefer – so you can spend your money on the things that matter, like tonkotsu ramen and shopping in Tenjin!

Across the eleven hostels our staff visited, mostly in the Tenjin and Hakata area, we found that every hostel in Fukuoka had something unique to offer with average rates from ¥2,500 ~ ¥3,000 per night. Some are traditional Japanese style inns, while others are foreigner friendly, Western-style hostels. Explore your options here, and find out which hostel best suits your circumstances, and make your stay in Fukuoka the best stay ever!

• Not located near attractions but convenient for access to Southern Fukuoka. Mixed neighbourhoods with many good quality restaurants and off the beaten track bars
Best for: Small groups requiring accommodations over the weekend in Fukuoka.

• Hostel is located in Kawabata Shotengai (shopping street); great location!
• View from the rooftop is superb: across the river and to Hakata
• In summer, the rooftop is used for parties
• Well decorated, clean living room area with board games and magazines

Best for: Convenience, as the shotengai has many food and clothing shops, and is very close to bus and subway stations. Great view from the rooftop.

Reception open hours (curfew): 15:00~21:00, security pin that changes regularly provided to guests to come and go freely all hours.

Reporter Impressions:
• Great location that’s very close to everything; right by Kushida Shrine so it’s an ideal place to stay during Yamakasa season as the festival can be seen from the hostel.
• Cute, traditional and clean living and kitchen area.
• 10 minutes walk to Hakata and Tenjin.
Best for: If you want to be close to a shrine and experience Japanese festive events. The hostel is right next to Hakozaki Shrine, which holds many cultural events throughout the year including Yamakasa in July.

Reporter Impressions:
• Very stylish and modern hostel, with the reception area turning into a cafe during the day
• Cafe serves excellent coffee
• Big TV that has foreigner friendly channels such as the BBC news
• Close to train station and easy to spot
• Great lounge with a jazzy music and access to cafe
Best for: If you’re in need of good coffee while you are travelling. The female-only dormitories are also decorated stylishly, and the facilities are modern and clean.
