Magic in Imajuku
After years of working in and producing trendy restaurant cafes in Tokyo and Fukuoka, Miyazaki-san has left the smoky cities for the rather unremarkable area known as Imajuku , just outside Fukuoka’s western city boundary. There lies Mongiwa, offering up a menu of mostly Chinese-style dishes in a renovated old, wooden Japanese building. Almost all the ingredients are sourced from the surrounding area, Itoshima. Miyazaki-san’s love for Itoshima is in fact the central theme of Mongiwa. Seasonal vegetables purchased directly from farmers, along with Biton Pork, prize-winning meat that is available only in limited quantities, are used in many of the dishes. The portions are large, yet the prices cheap. The fried gyoza are a must, as well as boiled gyoza served in ceramic pots with a creamy sesame sauce. The tantanmen, spicy Chinese noodles served chilled in the summer, are another standout. And don’t forget dessert! Shiratama dumplings served warm with vanilla ice cream, homemade anindofu (almond-flavored milk jelly), or the Imajuku parfait are guaranteed to put a sweet cap on the evening. Whether seated in the room in front of the kitchen, outside in the parking lot, or upstairs in the tatami room, Mongiwa is a great place to eat well and relax.
