The Kyokusui-no-en is a Shinto ritual that reproduces the elegant imperial court ceremonies of the Heian period. People dressed in glossy kimonos sit on both banks of a stream flowing through the garden, composing a waka poem before a cup floating down the stream passes by them, after which they pick up and drink from the cup. The ritual also embodies the act of purifying oneself from impurities by floating cups in the clear water, and it is held annually at this time. While it is possible to observe this event, spots fill up quickly, so it’s advisable to secure a place early.
