Since 1855, a venerable Itoshima sake brewery has been hosting its annual February opening. This esteemed event showcases sake made from Yamada Nishiki rice, acclaimed as the ‘king of sake rice’, locally sourced from Itoshima. The brewery is renowned for its traditional ‘Hanegi Shibori’ method, a labor-intensive technique, to produce its signature sake. One of their popular offerings is ‘Tanaka Rokujuugo’ (Tanaka 65), a junmai sake with a rice polishing ratio of 65%, appreciated for its everyday drinkability and has garnered a following both in Japan and abroad. The event is a much-anticipated occasion, especially for the sale of its limited-edition sakes. In 2024, the event will maintain a drive-through format exclusively for product sales, with no provision for brewery tours, exhibitions, tastings, or food and beverage areas.
