Kumamoto City revealed it will implement a new system of giving streetcars priority for the right of way in traffic light timing as a means to shorten the transit time from the JR Kumamoto Station to the central area of the city. City officials say that among the 19 cities in the country with municipal streetcars, only Hiroshima City uses a similar system. Under the system, signals that are green when streetcars approach will have an extended green period, while the period for those that are red will be shortened.
