Major Shipyard in Nagasaki To Close

Sasebo Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (SSK) announced the suspension of shipbuilding from January 2022. The ship manufacturer has played a significant role in the regional economy since it was established in 1946; however, the pandemic and international-business competitiveness has forced the company to cease its primary business. The company will provide early retirement packages to approximately 250 workers and support them find new jobs. SSK does not plan to sell the shipyard. Source: Asahi / Nikkei
