The Nagasaki Prefectural Institute for Environmental Research and Public Health has succeeded in creating a device capable of rapid testing at public baths and spas for the legionella bacteria, the cause of Legionnaires’ disease. At present, these facilities must present their water to a testing agency. It takes more than one week to determine the results because the bacteria must multiply first. The new device has no such requirement, and a facility employee can conduct the test in two minutes.
