The semiconductor industry is accelerating its concentration in Nagasaki Prefecture, with Kyocera and Sony Group both expanding their production capabilities. In addition to Kumamoto Prefecture, where the world’s largest semiconductor foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has set up shop, Nagasaki Prefecture has also seen increased investment in factories and equipment by semiconductor-related companies. Kyocera will invest approximately 62 billion yen to build a large-scale semiconductor parts factory in Isahaya City, with operations starting in fiscal 2026. Sony Group’s Nagasaki Technology Center in Isahaya City is also expanding its production facility for smartphone camera semiconductors. In addition, SUMCO TECHXIV, a subsidiary of SUMCO, a leading silicon wafer manufacturer, is investing in equipment to produce high-precision wafers in Omura City. The increase in the concentration of the semiconductor industry is expected to contribute to the revitalization of the manufacturing industry in Nagasaki, which has been suffering due to the decline of shipbuilding. However, the lack of water resources is a challenge for further development. Source: Nikkei
