The governments of Saga and Nagasaki prefectures revealed they will embark on a major program to move young tairagi mussels in the Ariake Sea to halt their sharp decline. One reason cited for the death of the shellfish is a lack of oxygen in the sea during the summer months. The plan calls for roughly 16,000 of the young mussels to be moved to areas of the sea with a higher oxygen concentration.
