One Collector, One Impressive Collection
Having lived through both world wars, the successful German-born industrialist Emil Georg Bührle was a passionate art collector his whole life. He spent the latter half of his life in Switzerland, where he amassed his world-renowned collection of impressionist art between 1937 and his death in 1956. In 1960, a foundation established by Bührle’s heirs opened a private art gallery in a villa next to his former residence to showcase the collection. After the theft of four paintings worth CHF 180 million (¥17.5 billion) made worldwide headlines in 2008, public access to the collection was restricted. An agreement has been reached to transfer the entire collection to the Kunsthaus Zürich in 2020.
