This May, a Bordeaux Wine Bureau (CIVB)-certified wine bar opened in Fukuoka along the banks of the Nakagawa River. At Au Bord d’Eau Fukuoka, you can enjoy a menu of more than 140 wines, including 20 Bordeaux wines, carefully selected by a sommelier to pair with dishes made using fresh local ingredients. It is the third CIVB-certified wine bar in the world after openings in New York and Shanghai. The atmosphere is casual, and you can stop by for a full meal or just a glass of wine. Chat with the sommelier to find a wine you like. Au Bord d’Eau Fukuoka opens every day at 11:30, so it can be your go-to spot for lunch meetings or a midday change of pace; there are tables to accommodate larger groups. Lunch is served on chic Aritayaki plates, and make sure you try their sweets—they compliment the wine perfectly. You can also ask the staff to order a bottle especially from a massive database of 4,000 wines, and you can purchase one of the rare wines stored in the on-site cellar.
