Plans to Increase English Native Speakers Teaching in Schools

The Fukuoka City Board of Education plans to increase the number of native speakers teaching English language classes at elementary schools. Until now, the city has relied on local international residents and Japanese natives fluent in English as guest teachers. Starting this year, fifth and sixth grade elementary school students will learn English from native speakers on a weekly basis. Schools will use temporary staff from recruitment agencies to ensure they have enough native speaking teachers. Fukuoka City will allocate about ¥200 million in the initial budget towards this initiative. Source: Fukuoka City website, 2/14/2018
