Event 1 ➤ AGAINST 2013 Main Event 9/21 (Sat.) @ Watanabe-dori, Tenjin
Now in it’s sixth year the Against Fukuoka Extreme Music Festival (9/7~27) has gained a solid reputation and following in Japan and also internationally. It includes performances, discussions, exhibitions and workshops by local and international noise, improv, free jazz, punk and grindcore musicians. The 2013 main event happens on Saturday Sep. 21, with Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love (The Thing/Atomic), Noise musician Lasse Marhaug and Tokyo based American musician, composer, producer Jim O’Rourke who will perform a special one time only Fukuoka concert at Jazz Inn New Combo.

Event 2 ➤ Kurume Yakitori Festival 9/21(Sat.)~ 9/22 (Sun.) @ Higashimachi Park, Kurume
Back for its 11th year, this two-day festival draws crowds of 40,000 yakitori-lovers. 17 yakitori booths and 18 sake stalls fill new venue Higashimachi Park. The motto is “Yakitori in your left hand, local sake in your right!” but be quick – stalls close when they sell out.

Event 3 ➤ Daimyo Matsuri 2013 9/21 (Sat.)~ 9/22 (Sun) @ Daimyo
A debut event for 2013, this two day festival promises visitors an eclectic mix of the culture that characterizes Daimyo area: fashion, music, art and gourmet. See local music acts LinQ, Flea Market, Big John Tenta and more perform live on stage, dig around the used book market, add some Daimyo gems to your wardrobe at the flea market, or enjoy body art and other beauty treatments by hair, cosmetics and nail professionals. There’s a gourmet stamp rally too!

Event 4 ➤ Cadillac Ranch Itoshima Finale 9/21 (Sat.)~ 9/23 (Mon.) @ Itoshima
The final hurrah of Cadillac Ranch! A three-day live music event (9/21~23) to commemorate their 12th and final year in Itoshima (closed this Aug.) Share memories and chill out with great live music, DJs, and food by the beach. Sun. night and Mon. just camping and chill. Come together.

Event 5 ➤ Suginoya Oktoberfest 9/21 (Sat.)~ 9/23 (Mon.) @ Motooka, Nishi-ku
It’s not October yet, but celebrations are starting early at local brewery Suginoya. Enjoy local beer with family and friends at Suginoya Oktoberfest (Nishi-ku) over the next two weekends! Open since 1870, Suginoya is famous for its sake and original branded beer. Some Suginoya specials include: Real Alt, Amber Ale, Pale Ale, Stout and limited summer special White Beer. You can also try brewery’s latest sake product AKAKA, along with their popular Yogurt Amaou, a liqueur made from Fukuoka’s Amaou strawberries and locally-sourced milk (also avail. online). There’s a bakery on-site where you can try their special “local beer bread”! Prost!

Event 6 ➤ Focus on Asia International Film Festival ~ 9/23 (Mon.) @ Canal City
Currently occupying Canal City for its 22nd edition, the festival is a highlight of Asian Month. This year’s festival kicked off on 9/13, but don’t worry – there’s still one more weekend of great films left for you to catch! Full schedule includes works from Turkey, India, Singapore and more.

Event 7 ➤ East Asia Film Festival 9/19 (Thu.)~ 9/24 (Tue.) @ Fukuoka Asia Museum
Running for six days, with films from Hong Kong, China and Korea, the East Asia Film Festival has been part of the Focus on Asia International Film Festival Fukuoka for fifteen years. This year’s focus is Hong Kong – with four films from Hong Kong, as well as two from China and Korea respectively. The selection covers a wide range of genres, from classic Kung Fu action films to romantic and serious dramas.

Event 8 ➤ Drum Tao “Phoenix” 9/22 (Sun.) @ Munakata City
After performing in over 400 cities in 20 countries, surpassing 5.5 million spectators; TAO celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The powerful “Phoenix” show mixes original numbers and well-known Japanese melodies, with costumes by acclaimed designer Junko Koshino.

Event 9 ➤ Hanabi World Cup 9/22 (Sun.) @ Huis Ten Bosch
The annual Hanabi World Cup is the centerpiece of Kyushu’s largest fireworks festival at Huis Ten Bosch! Watch the winners of the international preliminaries, the Japan preliminaries, and the defending champions test their skills against each other. Joining for the first time this year, Canadian team “Groupe Fiatlux – Ampleman (GFA PYRO)” will put on a display titled “From Canada with Love” with fireworks set off to an all-Canadian soundtrack. The team won the international preliminaries with a score of 4.556/5, praised for the coordination of music and fireworks. Japanese representatives Wakino Art Factory (Kitakyushu), and Yamasaki Enka Factory (Ibaraki Pref.) will go head-to-head with the Canadian team on 22nd September (Sun.) for the finals. Approximately 20,000 fireworks will be shot into the night sky! Theme park ticket & event ticket required – advance sales are open at online and convenience stores.

Event 10 ➤ Asian Curry Picnic 9/22 (Sun.)~ 9/23 (Mon.) @ Bayside Place
Do you love curry? At Bayside Place this long weekend you can have your pick of Asian curries from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, The Phillipines, Nepal and Thailand! If you want some variation, there are also Mongolian fried dumplings, Ghanaian pilaf and other tasty treats. Participating restaurants include Indian restaurant “Suraj”, Sri Lankan restaurant “Tunapaha”, Nepalese restaurant “Everest Kitchen”, Pakistani restaurant “Zaeka”, Thai restaurant “Raan Gan Een”, Filipino restaurant “La Cuisina 楽し〜な”. Asian Curry Picnic is a great chance to enjoy authentic curry by the sea.

Event 11 ➤ Three Day Irish Events 9/22 (Sun.)~ 9/24 (Tue.) @ Hakata Harp
Authentic Irish pub “Hakata Harp” is celebrating Arthur Guinness Day with three days of Irish Events this long weekend! On Sunday 9/22, authentic band Irish Cream will take to the stage from 19:00~ and 20:00 (entry free, 1 drink req.). Then on Monday 9/23, there’s a Guinness Day Eve Party – you can enjoy a crisp Guinness or Kilkenny pint of draft for ¥590 (usually ¥950)! Finally, on Tuesday 9/24, drinkers around the world raise a glass to honor the memory of Guinness brewery founder, Sir Arthur Guinness. At Hakata Harp, you can join the celebrations with discounted beer, and a special ¥500 food menu! Paint the town black this Arthur’s Day! The bar is located on the 1st floor of Hotel Eclair Hakata.

Event 12 ➤ World’s CM Festival Special Edition 9/23 (Mon.) @ Canal City Theater
With the best and most bizarre television commercials from all over the world, the crazy CM Festival consistently entertains and surprises its audiences. Following the main festival World’s CM Festival 2013 that took place in July, the CM Festival is back for another special edition as part of this year’s Focus on Asia Film Festival (which runs 9/14 ~ 23). This time they’ll be showing a selection of CMs exclusively from Asia, to tie-in with the theme of Asian Month in Fukuoka. The 1,000 seat venue of Canal City Theater will be packed with a fun crowd, and the big screen will light up with a selection of the Asia’s strangest and best commercials. Recommended for those who missed the all-night festival in July – this one’s at a more reasonable hour of the day too!
