Ichiran Investigated for Convenience Store Noodle Price Fixing

Ichiran, headquartered in Fukuoka City, is a major tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen chain with 85 outlets in Japan and overseas. The Japan Fair Trade Commission investigated the company for alleged violation of the Antimonopoly Law for demanding that instant noodles sold at convenience stores not be reduced in price. According to the JFTC, Ichiran was trying to prevent its brand from being damaged by selling at a low price and had made it a condition that the price of its cup noodles would not be reduced from ¥490, including tax. Following the investigation, Ichiran submitted a “commitment plan” last month that included voluntary measures to prevent a recurrence, and the Fair Trade Commission approved the plan today.
