Amami Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture has officially declared the eradication of invasive mongooses, completing the removal of all traps. Originally introduced in 1979 to control venomous snakes, mongooses severely impacted native wildlife. A large-scale extermination effort since 2000 successfully eliminated them, with no captures recorded since 2019. Authorities will continue monitoring to prevent reinfestation. Source: NHK
