Fukuoka Zoo Giraffe Nico Relocated

Nico, a five-year-old male reticulated giraffe born at Fukuoka City Zoological Garden, has been transferred to a zoo in Shizuoka Prefecture to support future breeding efforts. The move took place on April 21, with Nico departing in a specially designed transport crate.

Standing 4.8 meters tall and known for his curiosity and appetite, Nico was born on February 5, 2020, and named to inspire smiles and happiness. During transport, he was observed calmly eating his favorite zelkova leaves.

Nico will now be housed at the Izu Shaboten Zoo, where he will join national efforts to maintain the giraffe population through coordinated breeding programs. With Nico’s departure, Fukuoka Zoo now houses his two parents. Source: Fukuoka Zoo /  NHK
