Tanabata Festival at Nakatsugu on Oshima Island

START: Aug 7, 2025 END: Aug 7, 2025

Oshima, the largest island in Fukuoka Prefecture and home to Nakatsugu Shrine of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Munakata Taisha, is said to be the birthplace of the Tanabata legend. Within the shrine grounds flows the “Milky Way,” with Kengyu Shrine and Shokujo Shrine facing each other across it.

The island has long celebrated the Tanabata Festival. From July 7, colorful streamers adorn the area, and on August 7, a ritual is held where bamboo lanterns, green bamboo branches with tanzaku (wish strips), and decorations are offered in prayer for wishes to reach the heavens.

On the same day, a local festival takes place from midday, filling the road from the ferry terminal to Nakatsugu Shrine with decorations and lively Tanabata spirit. Visitors can enjoy sales of local specialties, stage performances, and more, drawing crowds from beyond the island. Special charter ferries will operate that day, and those wearing yukata can return for free on the ferry.
