Hakozaki Shrine’s Spring Shanie Festival is held on the day of Tsuchinoe (the “Elder Earth” day in the traditional calendar) closest to the spring equinox. The ritual gives thanks to the deity of the earth for a bountiful harvest and includes Oshioi-tori, during which worshippers collect sacred sand (masago) from the shrine’s consecrated Hakozaki Beach to take home In Hakata, it is customary to place the oshioi sand in a bamboo basket at the entrance of the home and sprinkle it over oneself when entering and leaving, praying for protection from misfortune. Ahead of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, participants also visit Hakozaki Beach to collect the sand and pray for the safety of the event. Deeply rooted in local life, this is a seasonal tradition unique to Hakata.
