A traditional kagura dance is dedicated at Takasu Shrine in Itoshima. Founded in the Heian period, the shrine’s existing main hall—built in 1541—is a rare example of medieval wooden architecture and was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2023. The kagura, said to date back around 550 years, is performed annually during the April spring festival and October night kagura.
Originally performed by local Shinto priests and now preserved by parishioners, the program features two styles: “Mai Kagura,” a quiet, unmasked dance performed to sacred songs, and “Men Kagura,” in which masked performers enact mythological scenes. A total of 12 pieces are presented, offering a rare chance to experience a ritual art passed down through generations.
