Fukuoka Doctors Investigate “Mystery Cold”

The Fukuoka Prefecture Medical Association said a respiratory illness referred to on social media as a “mystery cold” is likely caused by a viral infection. During a May 20 press conference, officials reported an increase in patients experiencing sore throats followed by runny noses, phlegm, and severe coughing. The association said investigations are underway to identify the pathogen and that more information may become available by summer. Officials also warned about rising heatstroke cases as temperatures exceeded 30 degrees in parts of Fukuoka and Saga prefectures. Between May 4 and May 10, 23 people were taken to hospitals for heat-related illnesses, up 16 from the same period last year. Residents were urged to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during extreme heat. Source: KBC News / Nishinippon Shimbun
