Sentomyo
A summer ritual held at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in July and September. To console the spirit of Tenjin-sama, approximately 1,000 candles are lit around Shinji Pond, filling the shrine grounds with a serene and atmospheric glow.
As dusk falls, rows of candlelights line the approach to the shrine and the pond’s edge, their reflections shimmering across the water to create a solemn and evocative scene. Strolling through the grounds after dark offers a chance to experience a quieter side of Dazaifu Tenmangu and its distinctive sacred atmosphere.
A beloved tradition of the summer season, the event can be enjoyed alongside a visit to the shrine.
