Hakata may be the best-known home of yamakasa, but Itoshima also has its own spirited tradition. Held in the Maebaru district, Maebaru Yamakasa is a summer festival with a history of around 300 years, dedicated to Hibuse Jizo and Oimatsu Shrine (Oimatsu Jinja). Nine local districts carry their own yamakasa floats through the town, racing through the streets to cries of “Oisa, Oisa” while being drenched with splashing water.
In 2026, the yamakasa procession takes place on Jul 25. Starting at 14:30, the nine floats depart at five-minute intervals from near the Itoshima Police Station and parade through the town center. From early evening, Iris Road and Meitengai Yoriai Hondori become pedestrian-only, with a beer garden and food stalls adding to the lively summer festival atmosphere.
