Every September, Nokonoshima’s beach becomes one of Fukuoka’s most distinctive cultural gatherings. More than a music festival, Isla de Salsa brings together artists and audiences from around the world for a day of live performance, dance, food, art, and spontaneous cultural exchange in a tropical setting just a 10-minute ferry ride from the city.
Now celebrating its 27th edition, the festival returns with one of its strongest lineups yet. Headlined by two-time Latin Grammy Award winners Septeto Santiaguero, this year’s program also features reggae singer Metis, Afrobeat-inspired Japanese festival band AJATE, improvisational percussion collective LA SEÑAS, Fukuoka’s own ethnic trance band HABANA, and a diverse mix of world music, dance, and cultural performances across three stages.
Set on the sandy shores of Nokonoshima Camp Village, Isla de Salsa is as much about the atmosphere as the music. Palm trees, sea breezes, international food and drink stalls, art, and three stages of live performances create a relaxed island festival unlike anything else in Fukuoka. Whether you’re dancing in front of the stage or unwinding with friends overlooking Hakata Bay, it’s an ideal way to celebrate the final weeks of summer.
More Than a Music Festival
Despite its name, Isla de Salsa has always been about much more than Latin music.
The festival takes its inspiration from the idea of salsa itself: different ingredients coming together to create something entirely new. Every year, musicians, dancers, artists, food vendors, and festivalgoers from diverse backgrounds gather on Nokonoshima to celebrate creativity, curiosity, and human connection.
This spirit is reflected in the festival’s subtitle, World Beat Matsuri. Rather than simply presenting a series of concerts, the organizers draw inspiration from the Japanese tradition of a matsuri – a community celebration where people come together to share music, food, culture, and experiences. Throughout the day, audiences are encouraged to become part of the festival itself, whether joining an impromptu dance circle, discovering unfamiliar musical traditions, or simply enjoying conversations with people from around the world.
World-Class Live Music
Leading this year’s lineup is Septeto Santiaguero, one of Cuba’s finest contemporary traditional music ensembles and a two-time Latin Grammy Award winner. Celebrating more than 30 years together, the acclaimed group has become one of the world’s foremost ambassadors of Cuban son, guaracha, and bolero, blending authentic eastern Cuban traditions with vibrant contemporary arrangements. Their long-awaited return to Japan promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s festival.
The supporting lineup is equally impressive.
Reggae singer Metis is known for her powerful vocals and uplifting songs promoting life, love, and peace. Her signature hit Mother’s Anthem established her as one of Japan’s best-known reggae artists, while her performances continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
Tokyo-based AJATE has earned international acclaim by combining Edo festival drumming, Afrobeat, self-made bamboo instruments, and soaring shinobue flutes into an explosive live experience. Their performances at WOMAD UK, major European festivals, and recognition by Songlines magazine have established them as one of Japan’s most exciting world music acts.
Percussion collective LA SEÑAS brings a completely different approach to live performance. Using the Argentine improvisation system Rhythm with Signs, musicians respond to more than 100 conductor’s hand signals to create performances that evolve in real time, ensuring that no two concerts are ever the same.
Returning to Isla de Salsa is Fukuoka’s own HABANA, whose hypnotic fusion of sitar, didgeridoo, djembe, electronic beats, and distinctive woven bamboo hats has made them a long-time favorite on Kyushu’s festival circuit.
Special guest SUI, the young flamenco dancer who gained international attention through Got Talent, joins a program that also includes gospel, ska, Bon Odori-inspired performances, and other artists representing musical traditions from around the world.
Beyond the Stage
Music is only part of the experience.
Throughout the day, Nokonoshima Camp Village is transformed into a vibrant festival village where international food stalls, art installations, workshops, and informal performances spread across the beach and surrounding grounds. Freshly prepared cuisine from around the world, handcrafted decorations, and the relaxed island atmosphere make it easy to spend an entire day exploring between performances.
One of the festival’s greatest strengths is its setting. Just minutes from central Fukuoka by ferry, Nokonoshima feels worlds away from the city. Palm trees, sandy beaches, sea breezes, and panoramic views across Hakata Bay provide the perfect backdrop for an event built around discovery and connection.
