Aso and Amakusa Offer Tourism Discounts

Municipalities in Kumamoto Prefecture’s Aso and Amakusa areas have launched tourism recovery programs after earthquake-related cancellations reduced visitor demand. Discounts of up to 50% on lodging, dining and other services are available through the end of September, ahead of the central government’s Kyushu recovery discount program starting in October. In Aso, seven municipalities announced separate support measures on September 1. Aso City offers JPY 5,000 off stays costing at least JPY 10,000 before tax and JPY 2,000 off stays of JPY 5,000-9,999, plus a JPY 2,000 local coupon. Minamioguni sold JPY 20,000 vouchers for JPY 10,000, with 2,000 sets already sold out. Kami-Amakusa will subsidize up to 50% of lodging costs, capped at JPY 20,000 per person, from September 4-30. Prefectural data showed roughly 190,000 canceled room-nights worth about JPY 2.7 billion through August 21. Source: Nikkei / Aso City
