Known for its vivid colors and intricate patterns, Indian chintz has a history stretching back thousands of years. Techniques for dyeing cotton with natural pigments such as madder and indigo originated in India before spreading through trade to Southeast Asia, Europe and Japan, where the textiles were adapted to local lifestyles and design traditions.
Centered on works from the collection of London-based collector Karun Thakar, the exhibition presents ceremonial textiles, clothing, bedcovers and other pieces. It traces how patterns and techniques developed in India changed as they traveled around the world and were reinterpreted in different regions.
During the exhibition period, related programs include a talk by Karun Thakar in English with simultaneous Japanese interpretation, as well as a lecture exploring the distinctive appeal and history of chintz.
