Kurume kasuri, a traditional woven textile with more than 200 years of history, remains part of everyday life in the region today. This annual autumn festival in Hirokawa, one of its major production centers, brings together local weavers and makers for two days of shopping, hands-on workshops, performances and opportunities to experience the craft up close.
At “Kasuri Koji,” visitors can browse bolts of fabric, textiles, clothing and accessories, while a separate market features goods made with Kurume kasuri. Workshops offer hands-on experiences such as indigo dyeing, weaving and button making, providing a closer look at the skills and materials behind the textile.
A popular highlight each year is the participatory “Kasurimpic,” where visitors take on kasuri-related challenges such as rolling bolts of cloth and undoing tied threads used in the resist-dyeing process. The program also includes a high school fashion show, a kasuri design contest and local stage performances.
Food stalls and kitchen cars serve regional specialties throughout the event, making it easy to spend several hours exploring the festival.
