I scream, you scream, we all scream for… beef? This unusual event combines Yufuin Namiyagi farm’s delicious beef with a high energy screaming contest in the natural surroundings of Mount Yufu, a gorgeous stratovolcano. The event is held in Yufuin annually on the public holiday of Health and Sports Day (Oct. 8 this year). 600 participants can enjoy local beef tail soup and all-you-can eat BBQ vegetables in the outdoors, before the real fun starts. 100 contestants take turns standing on stage and screaming as loud as possible into the stratovolcano. Winners will be chosen according to both the volume of the scream, and what they say– the more entertaining the better! In past years, contestants have even used the event to scream marriage proposals! 1st prize is ¥30,000 plus wooden handmade tableware, 2nd prize is ¥20,000 and 3rd is ¥10,000. There are also many consolation prizes including travel tickets! So warm up your vocal chords and “eat beef, shout!” this Monday!
