An annual December event features 15 geigi (geisha) from Hakata Kenban, important bearers of Hakata’s traditional performing arts, who take the stage to perform dances. This year marks the 30th memorial performance, the first in four years. The program includes “Iwai Medetai,” an indispensable part of celebrations in Hakata, as well as Fukuoka’s folk song Kuroda Bushi (with Shigin poetry chanting), combined with the sounds of shamisen and drums, and the beauty of Japanese music and dance, all glamorously presented on the Hakataza Theater stage. The performance lasts approximately two and a half hours.
